Raisa Alam.Raisa Alam is a rising junior majoring in Neuroscience and Behavior. She will be working this summer as a research intern in the lab of Joshua Gordon at Columbia University Medical Center. She is participating in a study examining the role of the reward pathway on stress-induced depression in mice using optogenetics. Read her blog here! Julia Pickel.Julia Pickel is a rising sophomore from San Francisco. She plans to major in Biology and minor in Spanish. Julia will be conducting research in Richard Mann’s lab at the Columbia University Medical Center this summer. She is studying neuromodulation in Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies). She will evaluate if certain neuromodulatory cells release multiple neurotransmitters. She will also study the role of neurotransmitters in different aspects of the walking behavior of flies. Read her blog here! Jerica Tan.Jerica Tan is a rising sophomore, planning on majoring in Biology. In her first year of college, she discovered a passion for plants, which she will be further exploring this summer in Professor Callahan’s lab. Jerica will be researching plant genomics as part of the Undergraduate Phenotyping of Arabidopsis Knockouts (UNPAK) project, studying and quantifying the phenotypes of Arabidopsis knockout mutants. The project investigates when and to what extent mutations in the plants’ genotypes result in changes in key fitness-related traits. Shoshana Edelman.Shoshana Edelman is a rising sophomore from Oakland, California, majoring in Neuroscience and Behavior. Shoshana is interning in the Weinberger Virology lab at the Gladstone Institute for Virology and Immunology in San Francisco. She will be assisting research on how the levels of different viral proteins affect the fate selection of the virus through manipulating levels of pp71 during viral infection, measuring gene expression with microscopic flow cytometry, and quantifying its effect on viral fitness. Read her blog here! Binita Shih.Binita Shah is a rising sophomore at Barnard from Westbury, New York pursuing a major in Cellular & Molecular Biology. Binita will be conducting research at the Frank Lab at Columbia University Medical Center under Dr. Joachim Frank. She will be collecting micrographs of ribosomes at time intervals to observe progress along the elongation cycle using cryo-electron microscopy. In addition, she will be working on a time-resolved cryo-EM with the aim of capturing the intermediate along the reaction. Read her blog here! Emma Vincent.Emma Vincent is a rising sophomore at Barnard College from Charlotte, Vermont, majoring in Biology and minoring in Dance. This summer, Emma will be traveling to Puerto Rico with other members of Dr. Krista McGuire’s microbial ecology lab to conduct research. She will be stationed at the El Verde Field Station in the El Yunque National Forest. Here, she will investigate the spatial relationship of microbial community functions with tree species and biogeochemical processes. Emma will utilize samples of greenhouse gas fluxes and soils from five tree species across a gradient of soil moistures to determine if a relationship exists. Read her blog here! |
