Math Initial Certification, MA
(MATH-INIT) The program in Mathematics at Teachers College offers a Master of Arts (MA) degree program leading to New York State initial certification in teaching Secondary Mathematics (Grades 7 – 12). Required coursework includes a minimum of 12 credits in mathematics content, 8 credits in mathematics education (theory and methods), 8 credits in general professional education, and 4 credits in student teaching. Given that degree requirements include specified courses and course categories, students in the MA program are expected to study and discuss the Program Guide with academic advisors. Since the demands of student teaching are great, normally no more than two additional full-credit courses (3 pts each) are recommended during the student teaching semester. Candidates are also required to have at least 100 clock hours of field experiences related to coursework prior to student teaching. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. |
Pre-Service Secondary Science Education (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, and Physics) with New York State Initial Certification, MA
(SCIB-INIT; SCIC-INIT; SCIE-INIT; and SCIP-INIT) The MA Pre-Service program in Science Education at Teachers College provides students with opportunities to study science education theory, the discipline of science (including its histories, philosophies, and epistemologies), and professional education. It also provides students with opportunities to merge these studies with intensive field experiences through field-based assignments, courses, and student teaching experiences. The Pre-Service MA program in science education is a 36-point program. Upon its completion, students earn both an MA degree and a New York State initial license to teach secondary (grades 7-12): Biology (SCIB-INIT), Chemistry (SCIC-INIT), Earth Science (SCIE-INIT), or Physics (SCIP-INIT). Some of the courses in the Science Program, and particularly courses in the broad and basic areas of education offered outside of the department, are offered in the summer. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. |
